What does the traditional creed require? It practically requires a mutilated Bible. More than this, it bids us to expunge precisely that which is noblest and divinest in Holy Scripture. I have no desire to ignore “the terrors of the Lord” (see next chapter). They deserve and shall have full recognition. I do insist, however, that those teachers misread Holy Scripture who forgets that its essential purpose is to unfold his name, who is “our Father,” and to proclaim his full victory in the extinction of all evil, and not in its perpetuation in hell.
